General Matsui Issues Order at Nanking Service
PRESTIGE TO BE CLOSELY GUARDED IN FUTURE
Nanking, Feb. 7.
In the solemn atmosphere following a memorial service for Japanese officers and men killed in action, General Matsui, Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Expeditionary Force in Central China, to-day instructed his commanders to tighten discipline in their units in order to “enhance the prestige of the lmperial Army.”
Among the high officers so adressed on the wind-swept Nanking Parade Ground was Lieutenant-General Prince Yasuhiko Asaka, a member of the Imperial family.
Speaking at length on [t]he determination of the Japanese forces in the face of the prospect of lengthy hostilities, General Matsui called the attention of his subordinates to the necessity of putting an end to various reports affecting the prestige of the Japanese troops.
This action, said to be unprecedented in the annals of the Japanese Army, was taken in the face of recurring adverse comment on reported treaches of dicipline by Japanese troops. ─ Domei.

今後は威信を厳格に守れと

戦没日本軍将兵の慰霊祭から引き続く厳粛な雰囲気の中、遠征軍総司令官の松井石根大将は本日、部下司官たちに「皇軍の威信宣揚」のため配下部隊の規律を引き締める様に訓示した。
吹きさらしの南京観閲場で訓示を受けた高級指揮官の中には皇族の朝香鳩彦王中将宮殿下もいた。
長期戦化の見通しに直面した日本軍の決意に関し長く時間を割いて語った松井将軍は、日本軍部隊の威信に影響する各種報道に終止符を打つ必要について隷下将兵に注意を喚起した。
日本陸軍の歴史に前例がないと言われるこうした将軍の行動は、報道された日本軍部隊の規律違反に対して繰り返される不都合な論評に直面してなされたものである。
