NANKING, Dec. 9. (7 p. m.─6 a. m. E. S. T.)─(AP)─Japanese aerial attackers pounded this capital of China all day long, but tonight Chinese still held positions around the city.

Chinese defence artillery hammered steadily at the Japanese closing in from the south and southeast.

Thus far the Japanese have been able to bring only their lightest artillery into play against the capital defenses.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 9. (AP)─The Japanese command issued an ultimatum today demanding the surrender of China’s abondoned capital, Nanking, by noon Friday (11 p. m. Thursday, E, S, T.) and threatening that otherwise the city “will become the scene of the horrors of war.”
【上海､１２月９日発､ＡＰ】日本の司令官は今日、最後通牒を発し、中国が放棄した首都、南京の降伏を金曜日正午（東部標準木曜日午後１１時）までに要求し、さもなくば市は「戦争の惨禍の巷となるであろう」と脅迫した。
The ultimatum was issued by General Iwane Matsui, commander of the Japanese forces in the Shanghai-Nanking area, to the Chinese commander, General Tang Seng-Chi.
最後通牒は上海～南京地区の日本軍司令官である松井石根将軍[大将]から中国軍の司令官である唐生智将軍[上校]に宛てて発せられた。
A Japanese war plane dropped a further communication to Nanking.
日本の戦争飛行機はさらなる南京への伝達事項を投下し、
“Abandonment of resistance will spare the city, its historic relics and spots of beauty,” it promised.
｢抵抗を断念すれば市とその史跡や景勝は救われよう」と約束した。
Japanese tanks were reported to have entered the southeast gate of Nanking.

Domei (Japanese) News agency said observers in airplanes saw the tanks entering the southeast city gate. Domei also said Japanese had entered Wuhu, Yangtze river port 60 miles upstream from Nanking.

Japanese said their army and navy air forces made haevy attacks on Nanking and surrounding territory throughout the day to back up Japanese armies encircling the city. Army flyers were said to have raided Nanchang, where Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek was reported in residence.

Wuhu had been the object of Japanese attacks for 24 hours. Many fires were reported raging there.
